Asian Games throwback with Jaspal Rana
The former shooter accompanied the 36-member-team as the chief coach. We had a lot of shooters from all over the country at the Tughlakabad shooting range [in Delhi]; she was one of them. For me they were just regular kids at the same level. Through his struggles, Rana has emerged as a beacon of hope and strength for aspiring athletes. His story serves as a reminder that true passion and dedication can overcome even the toughest of challenges. As we continue to follow Rana’s journey, we are reminded of the power of perseverance and the unwavering spirit of a true coach.
He grabbed his first grand international glory at the 46th World Shooting Championship (Junior Section) with a world record score in Milan, Italy in the year 1994. “We would spend hours playing video games, so much so, people had started doubting my seriousness towards the Asian Games. To my defence, that was the age to indulge and I did just that. Fortunately, I won the gold medal there,” he chuckled. This was the story at Rio 2016 too, where the shooters had failed to make their mark despite doing so well in other competitions in the run up to the Olympics.
Then world no.1 Jitu Rai, 2008 Olympic gold medalist Abinav Bindra, and 2012 medalist Gagan Narang had all failed to impress. His family belongs to the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand and is involved in sports and state politics. Both his siblings are also accomplished shooters.[15][16] He is married to Aarushie Verma, an environmentalist, interior designer and national level shooter in pistol & shotgun. Rana continues to contribute medals to India’s kitty after his career his own shooting career.
Meet India’s most successful athlete at Commonwealth Games —Jaspal Rana
Bhaker had a stellar run in Paris, becoming the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal. She also bagged two medals in the quadrennial event, becoming the first athlete from the country to do so. Jaspal always aimed for the Olympics but rued that standard pistol and centre-fire pistol were not part of the Olympic curriculum. He detested air pistol and free pistol because they were “slow” events although he still gave it his best shot, but failed. A while after Tokyo, Rana was sent with the Junior shooting team for the Junior World Championship which was held in Lima, Peru.
Days after Jaspal Rana was appointed as High Performance Coach for 25m pistol events by the National Rifle Association of anchor India, Manu Bhaker asserted that he will continue to be her coach. Perhaps, she saw in Jaspal the one and only coach who could shape her career. And, maybe, Jaspal saw in her a talent who he could mend and take to the next level.
Man Behind Manu Bhaker’s Olympic Success With Whom She Had Massive Fallout
She was good but three events were too much for her then. But, because of some dirty politics, she was told I was against her. I became the culprit for the entire national shooting team. Things went from bad to worse and we stopped talking. Rana, along with Surinder Marwah and Ashok Pandit had won a bronze medal in the 25m centre fire pistol team event as well.
- Sushma is married to Pankaj Singh, son of Minister of Defence of India Rajnath Singh.
- Manu had [won at] the youth Olympics and Commonwealth Games in 2018.
- Yet, despite these failures, shooting remains the sport which can make India a sporting powerhouse.
- Jaspal Rana got married to Reena Rana, and together they have two children- Yuvraj Rana, and Devanshi Rana.
- Jaspal saw an opportunity to bring up talent when he was appointed the junior national coach.
- When the entire nation would have expected at least two medals at the Olympics, we scored a nought.

I make training sessions as close to matches as possible. We create pressure [and a sense] of loss and victory. If she misses her target, she pays a self-imposed fine, donating to a poor child or buying treats for animals, which improves her karma. Under Rana’s personal guidance, Manu, who was struggling after the Tokyo Games, made a remarkable comeback and became the first Indian to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics since Independence. She was on a long break from the sport since then until early this month, when she returned to action at the National Trials for the upcoming events.
